The antiphon Salve Regina and other Marian chants from the late medieval Jesus Convent offer a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Aveiro in Portugal. Through an innovative and a multidisciplinary approach, we will illustrate the variability of manuscripts and melodies and provide unique insight into a specific female chant repertoire.
As the constantly evolving local or regional chant traditions are receiving unquestionably more scholarly attention in recent years, this project explores the dialectic between local features and its pan-European integration into the network of the Dominican order, focusing on the late medieval period. The Marian repertoire from the female convent in Aveiro is an excellent and relevant example of late medieval chant in Portugal, a relatively new field of research for musicologists that awaits further study and dissemination.
Aveiro’s sources are explored as local carriers of material and immaterial cultural heritage from two perspectives: that of the music historian and the artist-performer.
This project, as part of the EU’s Horizon2020 program, affirms its commitment to gender equality in research and innovation as well as to redefining the future of cultural heritage.
